On Friday, a brand new cinematic trailer for the upcoming God of War Ragnarök was released, and man, oh man, is it filled with hints at the direction the much-anticipated game might take.
The aptly titled “Father and Son” trailer is only 30 seconds in length, but that doesn't mean there isn't a big reveal. During a scene where we see Kratos and Atreus fight, they are taking turns talking about the fear of being alone and weak before they say, in unison, “you are not alone”. One way to look at this is that the two protagonists are expected to fight side-by-side like in the previous game, but there is also another way to look at this.
We already know the game will take place around the apocalyptic event called Ragnarök. If the trailer is anything to go by, there will be another monster ally in the game, Fenrir, much like the World Serpent before.
In the Norse mythology that the game so heavily fulls inspiration from, Fenrir is a giant wolf who was the child of Loki. Even though Fenrir is a god himself, the other gods hated and feared Fenir and one night, they tricked him and tied him up. During the events of Ragnarok, however, Fenrir would escape his chains and end up eating everything in the world, including the other gods.
Other evidence in the trailer pointing at the inclusion of Fenrir is a shot where a giant wolf appears to have a shackle on his leg, much like the fabled Fenrir.
God of War Ragnarok is expected to release on the 9th of November 2022, with pre-orders going live on the 15th of July.
